“We are dying from overthinking. We are slowly killing ourselves by thinking about everything. Think. Think. Think. You can never trust the human mind anyway. It’s a death trap.”

Andy Ralph’s works allude to an evolving narrative of distorted domesticity that straddles the line between function and fiction, comfort and eeriness, subjectivity and banality. Often employing basic household objects and products typically found in discount or hardware stores, he transforms individual, unassuming commodities with a humble function into the most improbable things. Our favorite is ‘Arrrgghhh!!’, a sculpture made of toy rubber sharks, super glue, and a basketball hoop.
No these aren’t haystacks stuck in a phone pole. Visit the Kalahari Desert in the south of Africa and you’re bound to run into a peculiar animal called the Sociable Weaver Bird. The birds are called “social” not just because they live in organized colonies, but because they build massive homes out of sticks, grass and cotton that are home to several other kindsbirds. That’s right, the nests are so large that birds of other species are welcome to setup shop, not the least of which is the South African pygmy falcon which lives exclusively inside the social weaver’s nests that often accomodate over 100 birds at at time

disturbing and grotesque, i’m surpremely uncomfortable with the images above. Having said that, it’s been awhile since i’ve had a real reaction to an artwork in this way. It had to be reposted. Incredible work.

Measuring just 4 x 4 x 8 meters this small, windowless room might normally be considered a claustrophobic nightmare if it were’t lined from floor to ceiling with dozens of mirrors creating a reflective universe that seems to stretch into infinity. Titled “The Phoenix is closer than it appears,” the room was constructed by artist Thilo Frank at the Museum of Modern Art in Aalborg, Denmark. The Matrix-like space also features a swing that allows visitors an opportunity to view hundreds of cloned reflections swinging at all possible angles. I can think of quite a few illicit substances that should probably not be consumed before entering this room. (via designboom, myedol)
Hey, litterers. Remember that banana peel or water bottle you so carelessly tossed in the street instead of a trash bin? Well, let’s hope this Brooklyn-based artist didn’t get her hands on it because she’s been using remnants of the DNA you’ve left all over town to create 3D portraits of what you could possibly look like.
The project is part of Heather Dewey-Hagborg‘s ”Stranger Visions” series which reconstructs the face of the DNA owner using simple genetic information found around New York City. She extracts DNAs from wads of hair, chewing gum, and cigarette butts to figure out the right maternal ethnicity, hair color, and gender before designing a matching 3-dimension face with a self-written software. Said software will draw up various possibilities of facial features, and Dewey-Hagborg would use her judgement to create the most aesthetically appealing versions of the DNA owner.

Untitled (Wings 1-4), 2007
Series of 4 photographs, C-print, aluminum, plexi, 160 x 160 cm
Large-scale studio photographs of miniature birds’ wings, inspired by the thematically analogous series of watercolors by Albrecht Durer. An attempt to depict the elaborate and delicate build of birds’ feathers with the highest degree of precision, which cannot be achieved trough painterly means and techniques. This project was prepared for the artist’s individual show at Almine Rech Gallery in Paris (2007), which was devoted to various experiences of flying.

The Brooklyn based multidisciplinary collaborative practice ‘Snarkitecture’ created the entrance pavilion of the 8th annual Design Miami. Working between the disciplines Art and Architecture ‘Drift’ consist out of 500 cylindrical white inflatable vinyl tubes, attached together and lifted up to create areas of circulation and invite visitors to sit and rest in this floating environment. Filtered light passes between the tubes and offers a view of the Miami sky and some fresh air. - from ignant.de
