Curator’s Monday 132 - Tumblr Artist

Jane Radstorm | on Tumblr (USA)

Jane Radstrom is a painter and designer based in Austin, TX. After studying drawing and painting at Watts Atelier California, based on meticulous renaissance traditions of masterful realism, Jane attended Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, FL, earning a BFA in Illustration. Jane creates works which she considers to be contemporary realism. “I have been inspired by photographic effects, specifically the manipulation of exposure to create images that look “real”, but contain more than a single still image. In choosing poses, I focus on nuances of body language and expression. It is important to me to show unidealized beauty and what I think of as a modern sense of confidence in candid moments. I hope that when you stand in front of a piece you can feel the presence of the person depicted.” Great thanks to artforadults for introducing us Jane Radstrom.

Raphael Halin is a French photographer and art director in advertising who currently lives and works in Paris. His photography is inspired by works from Gerhard Richter, Gursky, De Stael, Lucien Hervé, Rothko and Depardon. His latest Series, for example ‘Côte d’Opale’, show pictures of extensive places, in which the colors seem to flow into one another. They mediate a calmness and soft purity. Their minimalistic scenes let the viewer, who is confronted with a mass of advertisements and a sensory overload in general, exhale and calm down. We love his restful and beautiful shots and don’t want to withhold them from you.

Ivan Puig is a Mexico based artist who lets his own sculptures drown. Two of his works are called ‘Crecimientos Artificiales’ (Artificial Growth) and ‘Hasta Las Narices’ (Fed Up). The second series outlines a commentary about education and questions the artificial in the induction of knowledge. In a general manner it reviews the structures of power upon which the doctrine of education is ‘seated’ in the country and its system, strongly influenced by conflicts in the economic, political and social order. The first piece consists of different installations, its origin is related to the proportions of the events and its relativity. The comic narrative is employed. The spectator moves among the pieces like a zoom out. Though they both have pretty much different contexts and meanings, we appreciate this sculptures for their quite tragedy encouraging to think further about it without any noise.

Experimentation is a pretty standard part of the creative process, but it usually ends with an “a-ha” moment; once you know what you want to make, the trial and error part of the equation is dunzo. For architect Andrew Kudless, however, R&D is never over; he often pushes his sculptural work so far it accidentally ends up in a ten-foot wide puddle of plaster on his studio floor.

I’m really enjoying this series of stretched and interlinked classic cars by UK-based illustratorChris Labrooy. Labrooy graduated from the RCA with an MA in design products and has since been using various 3D tools to explore the intersection of typography, architecture, product design and visual art. His has exhibited at the design museum in London and his work appears in numerous illustration and design publications. You can see more in his portfolio and over onDebut Art. Marcus Møller Bitsch is a 20 year old freelance photographer from Denmark who has quite a passion for photography as evident from the pictures shown below. His fine art series is a beautiful and inspiring collection of unknown faces, surreal atmospheres, scintillating body languages and most importantly excellent mood throughout. Due to his childhood close to nature with an insatiable curiosity for life and a thriving imagination, he was always seen with pencils and markers close to him, ‘as the creative medium was the easiest way for expressing myself.’ He began photographing 3 years ago after a knee injury, which meant he had oceans of time to pursue his newly profound passion. On the whole this incompleteness helps to create a mystery, a curiosity to know more, look further into the lives of these characters.

Ed Spence is a Vancouver, Canada, based artist whose work spans many disciplines and utilizes text, photography, and public installation. His vintage photocollage series mimics a digital aesthetic by dissecting portions of the image into tiny pixels which are cut and reorganized by hand.

When he is looking for imagery, it really depends. Sometimes he comes across an image that just resonates with him. ‘Maybe it’s the colors, or the subject matter and composition that lends itself perfectly to the process. Other times, I have to search out content for an idea I have. Sometimes I will take the photos myself if the project demands it. In the case of my recent series of beach scenes and poolside swimmers, I’ve rephotographed them from vintage British Columbia tourism magazines.’ There is a narrative before and after element suggested in the two panels which leads to a more transparent process. There is a certain satisfaction that one gets while unravelling the mystery of how the image was created.

Earlier this summer Austin-based photographer Emily Blincoe created this comprehensive series of various candy organized by color called her Sugar Series. Such a great mix of common and nostalgic sweets. And … white underpants on a stick. You can see these and many additional objects organized by shape or color in her Colors Organized Neatly set on Flickr. You can also follow her adventures over on Instagram.

Kiev-based photographer Oleg Oprisco (previously) continues to amaze with his surreal style of conceptual photography that makes use of a muted palette, unexpected props, and mysterious figures to paint images from a strange, dreamlike world. You can see more of his most recent work over on Behance.
