Ryan Tippery | on Tumblr (b.1990, USA) - Line studies

Ryan Tippery is a visual artist and designer based in Chicago. Although it’s hard to define Ryan’s work as a whole, because he explores various styles and mediums that occasionally seem to conflict, overall he is highly influenced by psychological and sociological ideas and concepts:

“I would say that the work I’ve been making for the past two years is both intuitively and autonomously created. Decisions are made without the use of a fully processed rational thought. Instead I choose to tap into an unconscious thought process, or unconscious mind. By working this way I’ve started to notice personal patterns and choices being made and I find this very interesting.

I mainly work with ink, because it’s unforgiving. Once you make a mark there’s no way to take it back. I feel like this statement also applies to life and I feel like this keeps the work I do honest.

The most recent group of drawings that I’ve been working on, the line studies, are focused on the use of curvilinear line. In my sketchbooks I tend to draw more geometrically, with small rigid lines of ink. These line studies are the beginning of an exploration/examination into a variant style.

I feel that art should speak about the individual creating it, and although all art operates on this level to some degree, I’m most interested in the art that accentuates these personal patterns and choices.”
