See Abe Lincoln, Winston Churchill, Ghandi, and more of the world’s greatest leaders turned into artisanal art-damaged urban bohemians.

Yes, Abraham Lincoln did have a beard that would get him elected to the office of King of Austin, Texas, currently, and sure, he had a fondness for hats, but neither of those predilections made him a hipster. Shame on you for even thinking that. One artist wanted to imagine what Lincoln and several of history’s other most memorable leaders would look like as artisanal, art-damaged urban bohemians, and made it so.

Illustrator Amit Shimoni recently created a series of illustrations entitled “Hipstory,” which reimagines the rulers who shaped our world as people you would stop and point at in the street. The artist wrote in a post on Bored Panda that he often finds himself “thinking about the differences between these world’s greatest leaders, their beliefs and motivations, and our self-centered generation.” The months in development project puts those leaders in a modern context, and although they do look spiffy, one imagines their goals might be a bit less ambitious today.

In the series, President Kennedy, the man who drastically expanded the American space program and put a man on the moon is revealed with a pompadour and pencil-thin wisp of a mustache, like a common tramp. Prime Minister Thatcher, who oversaw the Falklands War, rocks a strapless leopard bra and mesh shirt, while Winston Churchill is dressed like a Vaudevillian strongman. Che Guevera would rolling over in his grave, though, not because he is shown here wearing a shirt of himself, but because those shirts have long been passé and the iconic image of himself is currently out of fashion.

Have a look at more of this series in the slides above.

Italian artist Nunzio Paci works with pencil and oil paints to create strange amalgamations of plants and animals in what he describes as an intent to “explore the infinite possibilities of life, in search of a balance between reality and imagination.” Paci currently has a solo show including several of the pieces you see here at the Palazzo del Podestà in Bologna through October 12. Some Sketches by Ricardo Cabret.

This is a collection of several sketches created by Puerto Rican artist Ricardo Cabret.

Ricardo Cabret was born and raised in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico. His artistic interest was aroused by Cuban contemporary artist Zilia Sánchez. After a graduation in Electrical Engineering, which is far away from a career as an artist, he co-founded Viva Epic Co., a company with a focus on sports and beach wear. The work as Viva Epic’s art director and head designer led him back to his artistic roots and Ricardo Cabret quickly decided to become a full time painter.

Ricardo Cabret’s distinctive artistic style caught the attention of different contemporary artists and soon his artworks were shown in various exhibitions in Puerto Rico. In his attempt to create a modern technological platform where science and art coexist harmoniously together, Ricardo Cabret moved to New York City, where he had two solo exhibitions until today.

The illustrations of Manchester-based artist James Roper draw on many diverse sources, from Baroque Art to the flow of energy found in complex structure, for example human beings. Rendered in delicate black and white pencil and splashed with the odd brush of colour to maximise effect, they are fascinating pieces of contemporary art. The subject matter is a diversified mix of fashion models, saints and abstract shapes.

We’ve been following the fine art illustrations of Latvia-based Alex Konahin for quite some time. He first caught our attention with his incredibly detailed ink illustrations of patterns that seemed to pop off the page. We were in complete disbelief that these weren’t three-dimensional. Then, in his surreal Anatomy series, he left us spell-binded as we saw the heart, lungs and stomach like we’d never seen drawn before. Who know our internal organs could look so artistic and beautiful?

Konahin’s latest work centers around small winged insects like the butterfly, bee and dragonfly. Called Little Wings, the series was inspired by a summer trip to the Netherlands where the artist was able to live away from the city and immerse himself in the countryside. Using just simple black pens, fineliners and India ink, the artist meticulously drew these winged creatures, in his usual mind-blowing way, with incredible precision and detail. Just stunning!

Adams Carvalho is a portuguese artist based in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
His works sway between animations, seductive images and Pop illustrations full of charme and glamour.
Carvalho gives to his urban characters a cartoon look with a basic profile by simply using colors and shadows, often monochrome.
Therefore, the final result is a huge graphic impact into a cheeky, funky kind of style.

I know i’ve posted this chick’s work before but she’s such a boss, i can’t stand it.  These are hand drawn illustrations of the Maldives.  Unreal.

Artist Zaria Forman, who we first got to know for her spectacular series on Greenland, continues to bring awareness to important environmental issues through her pastel drawings. Forman spent September 2013 in the beautiful Maldives, the lowest and flattest country in the world. She found inspiration there to create a new body of work that would shed light on a nation that could be entirely underwater within this century.

Each of her drawings, created with soft pastels on paper, are breathtaking in that they have a photorealistic quality to them. Forman has the ability to not only capture the different blue and green shades of the water but also the rising white crests of the ocean’s waves.

“I hope my drawings will raise awareness and invite viewers to share the urgency of the Maldivians’ predicament in a productive and hopeful way,” she states on her website. “I believe art can facilitate a deeper understanding of crises, helping us find meaning and optimism amidst shifting landscapes.”

Of the photo above she states, “Fabulous photographer Francois Lebeau took this the other day before it was finished - I just like that it gives you a sense of scale.” Love how she shares her “in progress” shots.

More of her work is here: http://www.zariaforman.com/

A few days ago the London-based illustrator and textile designer Ciara Phelan launched a new website. If you’re not that familiar with Ciara’s work then you’re probably in for a treat. Her collage-based illustrations typically buzz with energy and through her client work and personal projects she has carved out a distinctive style which feels fluid and natural despite the often rigid nature of her medium. One piece in particular which stands out for me is an ongoing personal project which mixes fashion illustration with Ciara’s love of Greek mythology. Combining collage with textures and vector shapes she has created three stunning images from Greek myth: Demeter, the goddess of the harvest; Aphrodite, the goddess of love, beauty, pleasure, and procreation; and Persephone, the daughter of Zeus and Demeter. I think they’re beautiful images.

It’s such a great series that I would love to see it continue. For now though, why not check out more work from Ciara on her website here. Enjoy!
